Digital technology at ‘Propaganda’ exhibit
MANILA, Philippines - Samsung, in partnership with the Lopez Museum and Library, introduces digital technology to the Filipino’s museum experience through an exhibit entitled, “Propaganda”, which started last Feb. 6 and runs until May 30. The exhibit showcases how traditional artworks converge with technology using Samsung Smart TV technology and device to enhance the museum-going experience.
The exhibit highlights unique digital experiences with traditional artworks and rare books found in the museum and the library. As a technology leader in the Philippines, Samsung aims to reconnect the younger generation of users with museums to help them appreciate Filipino arts and culture.
Through Samsung Smart TVs and mobile devices, visitors will see ultra-violet scans of Juan Luna’s “España Y Filipinas,” revealing details behind the painting; flip through digital copies of the library’s oldest books in its collections dating back to 15th and 16th century and view a video of the process of restoring and preserving them; and see Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo’s several studies on “Per Pacem Et Libertatem” on a tablet device.
“Technology is meant as a bridge between the youth and traditional institutions like the museum, and Samsung is here to offer its technology to make this happen. Digital technology is converging experiences on various screens. With our Smart TV technology, we’re making convergence possible, and the FACETS app takes advantage of this technology,” said Cris Concepcion, Samsung Electronics Philippines Corp. content and services director.
Artworks rendered for the Samsung high-definition TV’s crisp displays, for instance, reveal details users often missed by looking at the real painting, allowing them to appreciate the artwork more.
Filipinos who have experienced apps on Smart TV are beginning to appreciate art better. According to museum representatives, people “linger more” whenever they see a layer of augmented reality over a traditional painting set up in the Museum. They also asked more questions about the artworks and the artists after discovering stories behind the paintings.
“Our goal is to educate people about our rich culture and arts in the Philippines. We need to put art right in front of people – through the different screens they now interact with,” said Concepcion. “Our intent is not to replace the experience of visiting museums but rather enhance their experience and allow them to share their discoveries using our technology.”
“Propaganda” is presented with support from Samsung Electronics Philippines Corp., Tin-aw Artists Management, the heirs of Doña Narcissa de Leon (LVN collection), and ABS-CBN Film and Media Archives.
