Mining: Speculative or not

EVERYONE KNOWS - Chase Yap, 2TRADEASIA.com -

Another chapter in Philippine politics has ended with the Sandiganbayan’s verdict on the plunder case of ousted President Joseph Estrada.

Estrada has been charged with the capital offense of economic plunder in connection with allegations that he illegally amassed P4.1 billion during his presidency from July 1998 to January 2001.  Under Philippine law, the charge is a non-bailable offense and punishable with death.

This charge stems mainly from three allegations: acceptance of jueteng payoffs from gambling lords, the misappropriation of funds from the tobacco excise tax, and profiting from stocks manipulation.

It is that not everyday that a former president comes face to face with the consequences of alleged excesses of his presidency. And only time will tell whether the Philippines will be better off with the Sandiganbayan’s decision.
