The STAR was chosen to receive the Cyber Recognition for Print Media, the first-ever such an award in the country.
In a lavish ceremony at the University of Life arena in Pasig City recently, The STAR was cited for its role in disseminating important developments in the cyberworld.
The other awardees included Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr. and Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte as cyber icons in government, singer-rapper Francis Magalona as cyber icon for entertainment, Smart Telecommunications as best mobile game provider, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.’s MyDSL as best Internet service provider, STI as best cyber university, and the group of Kurby Glennford Chua, Jennifer Joy Shih, Mary Ann Tan and Helena Lim as best programming team of the year.
Netopia Internet Café was chosen as most supported gaming place, while Global Access Internet Café in Cebu City was cited for being the most stylish of all gaming cafés in the country.
The Philippine Committee said most Filipinos are not aware that the computer gaming industry is even bigger than show business, netting some P7 billion in revenues a year. "We would like to educate Filipinos about the possible fruits that we may reap from this industry," it said.
