Phl Eagle satellite breeding facility to rise in ComVal

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY , Philippines  —   – A satellite breeding facility will soon rise for the captive giant raptors being kept in custody by the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) at the Philippine Eagle Center in Barangay Malagos, Calinan district, this city.

The non-profit PEF is eyeing the 23-hectare property in Moncayo, Compostela Valley that was donated by the Iloilo-based Yap family to honor the memory of their parents, Sammy and Alice Yap.

PEF executive director Dennis Salvador said that the new property will be a great help to the eagle center’s programs in an effort to stem the extinction of the dwindling giant raptor population.

“Given current threats to captive populations such as disease outbreaks and natural calamities, this new asset will help address our plans to secure and isolate breeding populations not only of Philippine Eagles but other endangered raptors. We are truly grateful to the Yap family for this generous donation,” Salvador said.

?For years, the Yap family had been wondering what to do with their property and how to leave a lasting legacy for their parents.

They decided to hand over their Moncayo property to the PEF after watching a documentary, “Agila: Laban ng Lahi,” about the Philippine Eagle and the people working to save it.

The Yap family then contacted the PEF and eventually turned over the property, with one caveat: that the land be put to good use in pursuit of Philippine Eagle conservation.

The Malagos Eagle Center currently houses 34 eagles and 14 other species in the eight-hectare area which is also the main site of its captive-breeding program.
