Two Agusan barangays harness solar power

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Two barangays in Veruela, Agusan del Sur now use solar power for streetlights and dry- ing facilities through the help of the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) program of the government.

Barangay Sta. Emilia was the recipient of solar streetlights, while Barangay La Fortuna received a solar dryer, in addition to a multi- purpose hall.

PAMANA aims to extend development interventions to isolated, conflict-ridden communities, ensuring that they are included in the inclusive growth agenda of the Aquino administration. The project seeks to contribute in reducing poverty and empowering communities through conflict-sensitive, community-driven projects that address the needs of the people.

“A majority of the residents here don’t have anything to use for drying, and they make do with tarpaulins. Now everyone uses the solar dryer,” Barangay La Fortuna kagawad William Nuno said.

The solar dryer gives the farmers of La Fortuna a proper place to dry their crops. This streamlines agricultural processes, making the drying process faster while decreasing risks of spoilage.

In Sta. Emilia, residents now enjoy the solar streetlights lining the road.
