Trianon to launch colostrum food supplement
MANILA, Philippines - One magic of motherhood, particularly for humans and other mammals, is that for a few days after giving birth, mothers produce a special kind of milk — called colostrum — that boosts the child’s immunity and resistance to diseases and helps in the child’s development.
Given its considerable health benefits, the nutrient profile of this so-called “first milk,†formally identified as colostrum, has been harnessed from bovines in the form of oral food supplements so that older children and even adults may also benefit from it.
Colostrum is rich in protein and essential nutrients, and has a lower amount of carbohydrates and fats compared to regular milk. It is most notably effective against gastrointestinal ailments.
The antibodies it contains provide immunity and stimulates the development of the gut. It also contains high concentrations of immunoglobulins that fight harmful bacterial pathogens such as H. pylori that cause ulcers, among others.
It has also been proven to increase the surface area of the intestinal lining which, in turn, improves the absorption of nutrients.
For newborn infants, colostrum serves as their first protection against harmful bacteria. For non-infants, however, it still serves as an effective treatment for helping reduce gastrointestinal problems and other ailments possibly brought about by a weakened immune system.
Prior to the development of antibiotics, bovine colostrums served as the primary source of immunoglobulin for fighting infections. The immuno-globulins used in the first oral polio vaccine in fact were sourced from bovine colostrum.
Interest in bovine colostrums, however, waned when antibiotic drugs were developed, but since more pathogens nowadays have become resistant to those drugs, colostrum usage is starting to get back into the scene.
Being a naturally produced substance, colostrum is safe for human consumption and is shown to have no side effects. One misconception that has been associated with it though is that it may improve athletic performance. Though some athletes attest to its effects in improving their performance, there is insufficient scientific evidence to support this.
Colostrum has now been developed in the form of an oral food supplement to make consuming it more convenient. Filipinos can now look forward to reaping the benefits of colostrum as Trianon International, one of the pioneers of ethical food supplement promotion in the country, will be launching a new food supplement containing colostrum soon.
