Foreign dental expert to grace UP symposium

-

MANILA, Philippines - Prof. Kenneth Anusavice, one of the world’s most recognized dental experts and editor and contributing author of the foremost textbook in dental materials, will be the main speaker at the Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics Symposium of the University of the Philippines’ College of Dentistry on June 10 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Jointly organized by the UP Dental Alumni Association led by its president Dr. Armin Segarra, and the Class of 1991, the symposium dubbed “Reducing the Risk for Restoration Failure: What Do You Need to Know about Proven and Unproven Preventive, Restorative and Prosthodontics Materials?” also topbills another prosthodontics expert, Prof. Josephine Esquivel-Upshaw of the University of Florida.

The symposium will tackle timely and relevant issues and address concerns such as the ethical reasons for placement and replacement of dental amalgam and resin-based composites, esthetic limitations of composite crowns and bridges, dental cements and resin cements, how to take accurate impressions, ceramic restorations and crown designs, and how to maximize the survival of direct and indirect restorations, among other things.

Anusavice, who holds the rank of Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Doctoral Research Professor at the University of Florida, was professor and chairman of the Department of Dental Biomaterials, a position he held for 26 years.

In 1995, he took over the editorship of “Phillip’s Science of Dental Materials,” considered the most read textbook in dentistry which has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian.

Aside from being editor and contributing author of the textbook, Anusavice is also a reviewer and senior editor of numerous international peer-reviewed scientific journals and a contributor of chapters in several other reference books on dentistry.

Anusavice is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Lecturer Award given by both the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and the American College of Prosthodontics.

Esquivel-Upshaw, on the other hand, graduated from UP Manila in 1991 and earned her MS in Prosthodontics from the Northwestern University in Illinois. She has also written numerous research and scientific articles in scientific journals and is a contributor of several book chapters.

Registration fees for the symposium are: P3,500 until June 5 and P4,500 from June 6 and on-site.
