Naga City to host int'l math, science tilt

- Rainier Allan Ronda -

MANILA, Philippines - Naga City will play host to the 8th International Math and Science Olympiad (IMSO) 2011 that will draw young math whiz kids from some 20 countries.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild-Philippines, recently signed a memorandum of agreement with Naga City Mayor John Bongat for the hosting of the IMSO in the third or fourth quarter of next year.

Bongat said Naga City would do its best to repay the honor and trust given by MTG-Philippines in making the city the host of the international math tournament.

“We are honored and grateful to the MTG for choosing Naga and we’re excited to host this international event. We’ll prove to the MTG that we’re capable of being host to this tournament,” Bongat said in a press conference held recently at the Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City after the MOA signing ceremony.

“This event will not only promote us, this will also be conveying the message across schools here in Bicol that we’re pretty serious in developing science and math education in our schools, whether private or public,” Bongat said.

The MTG-Philippines will invite delegates from up to 20 territories and countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Africa, Bulgaria, Iran, and Australia, among others.

Chua gave assurance that MTG-Philippines would provide Naga City with complete technical support to ensure the successful holding of IMSO 2011.
