Melatonin helps asthma patients sleep better
MANILA, Philippines - Getting a good night’s sleep is generally challenging for asthma patients because of severe or recurrent wheezing, chest tightness, and night-time coughing.
Asthma is one of the most common and most difficult diseases to deal with. The World Health Organization estimates that between 100 million and 150 million people worldwide suffer from asthma and this number is rising by an average of 50 percent every decade. In the Philippines, asthma affects approximately 5.5 million.
In a study by Francineide L. Campos et. al., Campos evaluated the effect of melatonin on sleep in patients with mild and moderate asthma. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps maintain the body’s circadian rhythm, a 24-hour clock that plays a significant role in when people fall asleep and wake up. It is also believed to have sleep-inducing activity.
The results of the study showed that 3mg of melatonin administered two hours before bedtime for a period of four weeks can improve sleep in women with stable asthma.
In some studies melatonin was also proven to have significant effect on the sleep improvement of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia in intensive care units.
One of the most recommended natural sleep enhancers is Sleepwell Melatonin 3mg, a non-drug and all-natural food supplement which mimics the natural hormone that is produced by the body. It regulates the body’s natural clock, thus enhancing the quality of sleep.
