Asian Hospital breaks new ground with Lifestyle Medicine Center

MANILA, Philippines - There is no question that most health problems today are brought about by disease-promoting lifestyles. The rise of serious diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancers can be attributed to people’s lifestyle choices, ones that are filled with unhealthy diet, vices such as excessive smoking and drinking, and less physical activities.

With the alarming rise of people developing lifestyle-related diseases, the Asian Hospital and Medical Center has taken the lead in helping people alter their lifestyle practices and instill the importance of health and wellness with the unveiling of its new Lifestyle Medicine Center, a specialized section dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lifestyle-related illnesses.

“Asian Hospital has taken a systematic and comprehensive effort to incorporate Lifestyle Medicine into standard clinical practice. With our Lifestyle Medicine Center, we offer patients a holistic approach to healthy living through a tri-phase approach of prevention, detection and disease management beyond pharmacologic intervention, which encourages them to adopt a simple yet scientifically proven and evidence-based lifestyle changes,” said Theo Seiler, CEO of Asian Hospital.

Lifestyle Medicine is one of the newest programs at Asian Hospital, using non-drug, lifestyle interventions that focus on a person’s behavior and motivation in the prevention, treatment and management of disease.

According to Seiler, a growing body of scientific evidence shows that lifestyle intervention is an essential component in the treatment of chronic diseases and can be as effective as medication, but without the risks and unwanted side effects.

Lifestyle Medicine interventions offered include nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep management, smoking cessation, personal hygiene, dermatological procedures, and other non-drug modalities, including evidence-based executive check-up programs.

The Lifestyle Medicine Center has various departments dedicated to the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases attributed to one’s lifestyle — inside out and outside in.

Services exclusively offered at the center include the Pulmonary Unit, which offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the pulmonary concerns of patients; Center for Women’s Health, a one-stop clinic for obstetrical and gynecological needs as well as for the welfare and well-being of women; Executive Check-up (ECU) Section, offering multi-phase customized executive packages tailored fit to patient’s schedule; Nutrition and Wellness Section for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of nutritional deficiencies; Heart Station, which answers the preventive and restorative needs of patients with heart conditions; and the Neurosciences Section, comprised of top neuro-surgeons and neurologists adept in the diagnosis and treatment of brain-related conditions of adults and children.
