The truth about singaw

At some point in our lives, we all have experienced the throbbing pain of singaw. A tiny sore persists in the mouth and the sufferer winces in misery for many days.

Some people who get it swear they follow proper oral hygiene, while others desperately try out a range of remedies like rubbing salt, tawas or baking powder on the wound, and still many believe singaw sprouts from a deficiency in vitamin C or having dirty blood.

To better understand this common but painful problem, below are a few facts about singaw:

• The mouth and tongue are sensitive parts of the body. Mouth ulcers form when the delicate lining of the mouth is broken, exposing the nerves beneath, causing the individual extreme pain.

• Singaw is a social concern. Socializing becomes a drag when you’re feeling much discomfort; you become withdrawn and easily irritated.

• Foods that are salty, sour, and spicy stir up teary pain in the singaw sufferer.

• Mouth ulcers form when you accidentally bite your inner cheek, also through vigorous toothbrushing, when hot food scalds your mouth, because of braces/denture irritation, or misaligned teeth.

• People experience solo singaw, clusters of up to five sores, and in serious cases of mouth ulcers, that number to about 100 at a time.

• Proper oral hygiene is recommended to reduce the incidence of mouth ulcers. That includes a trip to the dentist every six months.

• Avoid using harsh oral care products that can ruin the balance of good and bad bacteria inside your mouth.

• Maintain a balanced diet to strengthen your immune system. Load up on vitamins B and C, iron and zinc.

• Mouth ulcers could be a symptom of more serious medical conditions such as herpes or gastrointestinal disease. When you observe that singaw often recurs or if it remains unhealed for more than two weeks, it’s time to consult a physician.
