New home for diabetes institute in Marikina

After years of residing at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay (UERM) Hospital, the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation Inc. (ISDFI) will now have its own home in Marikina City.

The building will be inaugurated on Oct. 22. Part of the program is a motorcade from EDSA Shangri-La Hotel and will end in Marikina City prior to the building launch.

The ISDFI was conceived and dedicated to the national fight against diabetes that now plagues the land. It was introduced in 1989 by Dr. Ricardo Fernando, a diabetologist at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Capitol Medical Center and the UERM Hospital.

Together with colleagues Dr. Araceli Panelo and Dr. Isidro Cariño, they put up a learning institution for the study of diabetes which is now recognized by the Commission on Higher Education.

To help prevent and delay the onset of this treacherous "silent epidemic" and its complications, ISDFI has developed its newest project, the Center for Diabetes Care (CDC), by providing a team approach to diabetes self-management, which also offers standardized treatment and patient education from diabetes nurse specialists and diabetes nutrition specialists, all of whom are certified diabetes educators.
