Probiotics show dramatic results

-
Promoting health is the very foundation of Yakult. A major player in the field of probiotics, it has been conducting a wide range of medical studies and researches on how to improve one’s health and well-being through a healthy digestive tract.

Probiotics has been recognized as beneficial in improving certain disease conditions, among them gastro-intestinal related-illnesses like the Short Bowel Syndrome.

The Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) is a disease affecting people who have had half or more of their small intestine removed.

Diarrhea is the main symptom of Short Bowel Syndrome. Many people with it are malnourished because their remaining small intestine is unable to absorb enough water, vitamins, and other nutrients from food. They may also become dehydrated, which can be life-threatening.

Problems associated with dehydration and malnutrition include weakness, fatigue, depression, weight loss, bacterial infections, and food sensitivities.

The active bacteria called Lactobacillus Casei Shirota Strain, which is about eight billion good bacteria found in one bottle of Yakult can aid in the treatment of SBS.

A hospital in Tokyo spearheaded a study on the advantageous effect of the Lactobacillus Casei Shirota Strain.

It was noted during the study that a person suffering from major ailments and taking too many antibiotics for a long time suffers from abnormal intestinal bacterial flora.

Most of the intestinal bacteria are killed by the antibiotics. However, some patients may suffer from dreaded intestinal bacteria that had developed strong resistance to a wide range of antibiotics.

A pediatric surgeon proposed the use of probiotics in the medical treatment of two young SBS patients. Normally for a healthy child, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are predominant inside the intestines.

These organisms are responsible for preserving normal intestinal conditions and protecting our health, resulting in weight increase and body resistance to the effects of surgery.

A tie-up was done with Yakult’s Central Institute. Two researchers from the institute were assigned to monitor the study. The researchers were not given any information regarding the patients.

They found out that the intestines of both children were overwhelmingly full of disease-causing Candida. Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, which were supposed to be present, could hardly be seen.

Then, finally the probiotics therapy began. The effect of the live bacteria, the probiotics, was dramatically shown the next day.

Fermentation of food in the large intestine was indicated by observed gas formation. This is proof that the digestive absorption inside the intestine was progressing.

Live Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria were discovered in the stool. These bacteria had never been seen in the patients’ intestines before. In addition to these, digestive absorption was progressing.

Six months after the start of the administration of the probiotics treatment, the disease-causing Candida was almost gone. Instead, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria were building up. Both patients’ weight rose dramatically after half a year. Probiotic therapy was a success.

This is just one of the many documented cases worldwide showing how Yakult Probiotics can help in dramatically improving one’s health. People suffering from gastro-intestinal problems like SBS can now turn to Yakult Probiotics to help improve this kind of condition.
