Lecture, workshops on health research

The Health Unit of the Ateneo de Manila Graduate School of Business is sponsoring a public lecture and a couple of workshops on qualitative health research by Dr. Jon Adams, a lecturer on health social science and coordinator of the Qualitative Research Laboratory of the University of Newcastle in Australia.

The lecture and workshops will be held at the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell, Makati. They are open to the public.

Adams will talk about "Critical Social Science in Health Research: Challenges and Opportunities" on Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Exploring a number of case studies and drawing upon his own research experience in complementary medicine over the last 10 years, he will discuss the role and benefits of critical social science for expanding the research paradigm.

Adams will also hold two separate workshops on the topic "Qualitative Health Research: From Design to Analysis" on Nov. 5 and 6.

In both workshops, he will discuss the applications of qualitative research methods in the medical and health field and how these methods provide a valuable complement to quantitative research more traditionally associated with the health field.

The workshops generally aim to introduce students, health professionals and researchers to social analysis as a means to help them to both understand and appreciate the basic tenets of qualitative research and also gain analytical skills vital to a good quality research.

The Nov. 5 workshop will be held for graduate students under the Ateneo Master in Health Care Management-Leaders for Health Project.

The Nov. 6 workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Room 213 of the Ateneo Professional Schools. It is open to the public.

Adams holds a doctorate degree from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and holds visiting research fellowships at the University of Leeds, UK; Campinas State University, Brazil; Zheijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, China; and University of Tasmania, Australia.
