New coating solution to beat the summer heat

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - There is now a way to beat the summer heat in homes, even if one lives in a poorly ventilated condominium unit

A new energy efficient roofing solution from Australia is now available locally through Strategiweb, a Filipino-owned company.

Strategiweb will be the sole distributor of the product in the country.

In an interview with The STAR, Strategiweb principal stockholder and former banker Federico Pascual said the new product, called Thermoshield, can reduce heat by 45 percent.

“It saves electricity. You also save on electricity and it saves you on water-proofing and rust-proofing,” Pascual said.

He said although the product costs a bit more than ordinary paint, Pascual said it would still translate to savings as users would cut down on electricity usage.

“The cost is a little bit more expensive but you also save a lot on energy costs,” he said.

Pascual said the paint is ideal for warehouses, condominiums that have poor ventilation, or homes that simply want to improve their energy systems.

“This is ideal for anything that has heat problems. Target market are warehouses, factories and residential homes,” Pascual said.

Essentially, the technology, which is used in space shuttles, helps prevents heat from seeping through.

In its product profile, Thermoshield Australia said the product’s insulation coating is so unique and effective because its construction contains a high volume of ceramic solids, rather than simply being an external white paint without any thermal properties.

“Thermoshield coating is composed of millions of hollow, ceramic vacuumed beads that create ‘dead air’ space which is the fundamental key to insulation,” it said.

“Whether Thermoshield is applied on a new roof, applied as part of our restoration system or being applied to ‘seal’ a building for corrosion prevention, all applications of Thermoshield will result in preventing major heat transfer in any environment,” the company added.

Furthermore, it said the product reduces internal temperature by up to 45 percent, reduces cooling costs by up to 40 percent and reduces UV (ultraviolet) penetration by up to 96 percent.

“Thermoshield ensures an investment in a ceramic coating is a long term one,” it also said.

Pascual, former president of Allied Bank, Philippine National Bank and the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), reiterated that investing in a product that is more expensive but translates to energy efficiency is not only practical but effective as well.
