Shedding light on BLINDS

Whether you’re moving in to a new home or refurbishing an old one, it is always advisable to go for blinds for your windows.

The style and safety features of blinds, for one, have come a long way, thanks to companies like Hunter Douglas that have revolutionized the form and functionality of the product.

Blinds also offer numerous advantages compared to curtains. Here are some of them:

1. Light control. Blinds can control light better than curtains. Hunter Douglas’s blinds, in particular, are known for their variety and flexibility in controlling light. During daylight hours, they allow a healthy measure of sunlight to enter a home. They can likewise diffuse and gently filter it, rather than block it, so that its positive effects can still be felt without the nuisance of a harsh glare.

2. Energy efficiency. Studies show that 50 percent of solar heat that enters a room comes in through windows. With curtains or draperies, it’s hard to control the room’s temperature as the day changes, but with blinds, it’s easier to either trap heat inside or prevent it from coming in. Hunter Douglas has particular fashioned blinds that can help increase or decrease temperature as it enters a room.

3. UV Protection. Just as sunscreen protects skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, blinds can protect a room’s furniture. Furnishings made of wood, for instance, can suffer premature ageing the same way people do. Too much light and heat can likewise bleach and dry out and fade the color of paintings and Oriental rugs. Virtually every Hunter Douglas product filters out at least 75% of the sun’s harmful UV rays when closed over double-glazed glass windows. Many of its products provide even greater protection, up to 99 percent when closed.

4. Unwanted sounds. If your room is prone to reverberations and echoes, blinds can help absorb those sounds. This is also true of sounds that come from outside. Hunter Douglas has blinds specifically made to address these concerns.

5. Style. There was a time when one can’t be creative with one’s blinds the way one can be imaginative with one’s curtains. But Hunter Douglas has changed all that. Now, blinds can easily address one’s design needs. Vertical blinds, for one, can add height and dignity to a room, while horizontal ones can evoke relaxation and informality. And when it comes to design-savvy blinds, interior designers and decorators look to Hunter Douglas as their brand of choice — whether they’re designing a family home, a vacation house, a café, a restaurant, or an entire office. The company’s wooden blinds, for one, are a very popular choice among them. Made of real hardwood from the United States, they are sanded and finished to exacting standards.

6. Privacy. If you live in a busy street, privacy is first and foremost about blocking unwanted views. If you live in a private subdivision, privacy is not about blocking views but about creating a sense of emotional security.

7. Durability. Blinds are good investments as they can last one a lifetime. Hunter Douglas Venetian blinds, for one, are known in the industry for their for their high quality aluminum slats with high tensile strength that can resist moisture and minimize permanent bending and damage.

8. Care and cleaning. While curtains need washing and drying, all you have to do to clean blinds is to wipe it with a moist cloth!
