Two weeks after breaking ground on a 10-story ecommerce building, SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) begins construction of a convention and exhibition center at the SM Central Business Park. The two projects, along with the Mall of Asia, the Philippines biggest shopping mall, are aimed at positioning the SM Central Business Park as the countrys new premiere business district. The 60-hectare SM Central Business Park is located right at the heart of Manila, against the backdrop of the famous Manila Bay sunset and a stones throw away from the international airport and key seaports.
SMIC vice-chairman Henry T. Sy Jr. and SMIC first executive vice-president Hans T. Sy led the groundbreaking on March 23, 2006, by unveiling the project model and the architects perspective. Philippine Reclamation Authority general manager Silvestro Bello III, Department of Tourism NCR director Reynato Chua, and Pasay City Councilor Dr. Jose Antonio Roxas attended the event.
MAITRADE Expo and Convention Center, which is expected to cost P900 million, is scheduled for completion in June 2007. International firm Arquitectonica is the projects design consultant while the architect of record is Jose Siao Ling and Associates. MAITRADE will become the countrys largest privately-run exhibition and convention center. The 46,647-square meter building will have three floors and basement parking with a total leasable area of 19,800 square meters featuring large exhibition areas and function rooms.
"MAITRADE is envisioned to become a preferred venue for major conferences and trade exhibits as it will offer more modern facilities and larger floor areas for international and local exhibitions, conferences, events and functions," said SMIC executive vice president Jess Lucas. "It incorporates a contemporary look and world-class design that raises the level of prestige and exposure of trade exhibitors."
The buildings design allows for maximum use of space, giving exhibitors flexibility and options in terms of their specific area requirements. The exhibition area at the ground level will have a floor area of 9,000-square meters, which can be divided into four halls. Commercial shops will be located along the perimeter. A bridgeway on the second level will connect MAITRADE to the Mall of Asia, the SM groups biggest shopping mall. The third level will have a total floor area of 8,730 square meters, which can be divided into six halls for functions and conventions, along with nine meeting rooms.
