MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office has issued show-cause orders to 24 registered owners of trucks for using worn-out tires, LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II reported yesterday.

Mendoza said the move is part of the LTO’s intensified campaign to ensure the roadworthiness of trucks.

“We observed that there has been an utter disregard to road safety by some erring truck owners. Some of the common violations are the use of worn-out tires, which are dangerous not only for truck drivers but also to other road users,” Mendoza said.

Under the show-cause order, the owners of apprehended trucks were instructed to bring the vehicles to the nearest LTO offices for roadworthiness inspection.

“We will not allow these truck owners to disregard the traffic rules. The instruction of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista is clear: to make the roads safe for all users,” Mendoza said.

The truck owners were also ordered to submit a written and notarized explanation as to why they should not be charged for violating Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

Trucks covered by the show-cause orders were placed under alarm pending compliance with motor vehicle inspections.

Mendoza has ordered LTO enforcers to intensify the campaign against trucks violating the road safety rules following an accident on the Katipunan flyover, which left four people dead and more than 20 others injured.
