MANILA, Philippines - Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) unveiled at Le Pavilion Tent the other day its new flagship minivan, the Alphard, with which it aims to strengthen Toyota’s line-up in the Commercial Vehicle category.
The Alphard’s aerodynamic styling and bold stance exude a strong presence that complements a luxurious and remarkably spacious interior. Named after the Greek letter alpha, which also refers to the brightest star in the constellation, the Alphard was designed to stand out and shine in the automotive landscape.
Following the theme “majestic flagship,” the Alphard sports a large and stately exterior highlighted by V-shaped character lines, a steeply raked windshield that flows down onto the hood, large chrome-accented front grille, and prominent three-dimensional headlamps.
The sides of the vehicle present a solid yet minimalist design expressed through its wedge-shaped profile, crisp character lines, and dynamically shaped side windows.
The Alphard features projector-type HID xenon headlamps with intelligent Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) and handsomely integrated rear combination lamps. Front wipers are equipped with automatic rain sensors, while the rear wiper operates in a downward motion and is concealed in the rear spoiler when not in use – a design function first seen in the Lexus RX 350.
To enhance visibility while reversing, automatic power folding and Reverse gear-linked functions have been adopted for the outer door mirrors, which pivot down to show the curbs. The doors are equipped with automatic easy closer and power slide feature for more convenient ingress and egress.
On the inside, an array of luxurious and state-of-the-art features provides a welcoming atmosphere comparable to that of luxury sedans. Wood grain and metal accents intricately embedded in the instrument panel and console create a feeling of class and elegance, suitable for a flagship model. LED mood lighting sets a relaxing ambience inside the cabin. The Alphard also boasts twin moon roofs to enhance the occupants’ riding experience.
The Alphard’s low-floor design allows for a spacious cabin by keeping the overall vehicle height down while providing generous headroom. The front passenger’s seat and second-row seats are equipped with power-actuated ottomans, while the third-row seats offer both comfort and versatility. Meanwhile, the seven-seater configuration allows for flexible storage space with its foldable seat feature.
The multi-information display provides the driver with key information including how to achieve fuel-efficient driving. The Alphard also boasts of a sophisticated audio system with NXT ceiling actuators that spread sound out evenly across the cabin. This class-leading feature is present only in high-end sedans and sports utility vehicles.
The Alphard is powered by Toyota’s 2AZ-FE 2.4L VVT-i engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. It produces a maximum output of 167 hp at 6,000 rpm with 227 Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. For its suspension system, it is equipped with MacPherson struts with stabilizer in front and a torsion beam-type rear axle. And to accentuate its elegant exterior and help deliver stable handling, the Alphard is fitted with 6-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped with 215/65R-16 tires.
Finally, to ensure full occupant protection, the Alphard is equipped with driver and passenger airbags, driver knee airbag as well as curtain and side airbags. Additional collision safety is ensured with the adoption of impact-absorbing chassis structures and mechanisms.
With all these high-end features, the Alphard promises a luxurious feel and unparalleled comfort perfect for leisure driving and long family journeys. It’s a vehicle that embodies top-notch hospitality and should inspire pride of ownership. Needless to say, a STAR test drive will verify if it lives up to those promises.
The Alphard comes in three colors – White Pearl, Silver Metallic and Raven Black – and is available at all authorized Toyota dealers nationwide for P2,790,000 (for standard colors) and P2,805,000 (for White Pearl).
