Mini-monstrosity

-
In the Disney movie "Lilo & Stitch", an alien scientist named Dr. Jamba Jukiba created an indestructible little monster whose sole purpose is to destroy large cities. His creature, Experiment 626, not only looked formidable but also looked cute. It was eventually named "Stitch" and was the movie’s central character.

A new vehicle from Suzuki likewise became the central character at the Westin Philippine Plaza when it was launched to the public recently. The Suzuki Jimny 4X4 was tagged as a "cute" four-wheel-drive vehicle, but one look at its specs revealed a formidable mini-SUV.

The Jimny is powered by a smooth-revving M13A engine, an all-aluminum 1300cc four-cylinder powerhouse that features double overhead camshafts and 16 valves. The engine develops 80hp at 5,500rpm and 110 N-m of torque at 4,500rpm and power is transferred to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic through an efficient chain drive system.

Power is routed to the wheels via Suzuki’s Drive Action 4X4 system, which features an air-locking hub that allows shifting between 4WD and 2WD modes while driving below 100kph. A sturdy ladder-type frame holds all these technology and provides a solid foundation for serious off-road performance.

The compact dimensions of the svelte body use a small patch of the terra firma, but its visual impact is quite stellar. And like the cute "Stitch" of the movie, despite its formidable visage, it has a soft spot for its human companions. For inside the Jimny are ergonomic creature comforts fitting a family saloon.

Priced at P548,000 for the base JL model with 5-speed manual transmission, P598,000 for the JLX M/T and P640,000 for the 4-speed auto JLX, the new Suzuki Jimny enters the foray of mini-SUVs with its guns ablazing, raring to pounce on its mainstream rivals. Just like the cute mini-monstrosity in the movie.– Lester Dizon
