A gathering of Benz Warmers

- Lester Dizon -
Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts were treated to an eyeful of fine examples of M-B automobiles at the Rockwell Center last September 22, 2001, during the Mercedes-Benz Block Party. The balmy Saturday afternoon, the soft glow of the hazy sky and the deep shine of the cars on display were an organizer’s dream and a refreshing sight for car enthusiasts.

Sponsored by Commercial Auto Sales and Service Corporation (CASSCOR), Petron Blaze, Citibank, Prudential Guarantee, Siemens Mobile Phones and Leather Interia, the event was organized by the Rockwell Club in cooperation with the Mercedes-Benz Club of the Philippines. The party attracted more than 50 Mercedes-Benz automobiles of various age to compete in the show, while CASSCOR displayed the latest M-B products available in the market, such as the C-class sedan and the MLB sport utility vehicle.

A short program was emceed by the Rockwell Club’s Johnny Revilla, and featured a speech from CASSCOR VP Tony Andal on the services of his company, and a technical orientation conducted by Willie Malay of the Mercedes-Benz Club. focusing on pre-1975 models, 123-series cars and Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN). The program was capped by the awarding of the show winners.

The automobiles were judged according to categories, which included pre-1975, 123-, 201-, 124-series and contemporary cars. The criteria for judging was broken into 50% exterior, 30% interior, 10% engine and 10% overall automotive appeal. Judges were hard pressed since the cars were all well maintained and meticulously prepared. One judge confided that he had a difficult time deciding in the 201-series category, which showcased a handful of 190E, 190D, and 2.3-16 baby Benz cars, since the cars gathered very close scores.

There were two special awards given during the Block Party. The Most Unusual or Unique Automobile, which went to Tony Co and his white 1987 300 stretched limousine, and Rockwell’s Choice, which was awarded to Tomas Lorenzo and his beautiful 1968 280 SL.

The party, which started in the mid-afternoon, lasted deep into the night. Towards its end, participants went around Rockwell Center in a motorcade of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, a fitting end to a perfect day for car enthusiasts who value German cars adorned with the tri-star emblem.
