The trick of the trade

MANILA, Philippines - He was a waiter at one of the biggest restaurants in Macau when Gilbert De los Santos fortuitously experienced the event that was to change his life for good. Little did he realize that from one of his customer would emerge a business opportunity that was hard to resist.

“I was serving a meal for Mr. Kaoru Nakjima. After the meal, he asked me if I would be interested to join Amway. And because I was curious, he invited me to a meeting the next day. He explained the Amway business and I thought this would improve my earnings and at the same time be with my family,” Gilbert recounts.

He was unlikely candidate to go into this venture. A virtual neophyte in direct selling business, lacking in any experience in sales and marketing, Gilbert was on the brink of starting a promising career with Amway. “I was a former overseas worker in Jeddah and in Macau. I started to work at the age of 19. My life was full of struggles. I had to stop college to help my parents financially.”

Gilbert’s decision to come home was a bold move for an inexperienced entrepreneur. To his credit, he has managed exceedingly well, becoming a hard-working, creative and diligent entrepreneur with his Amway business. “Things have definitely changed for the better. Before, my salary was not enough to provide for all our needs. We had no savings and no money for any kind of recreation. When I started with Amway, we were able to rent our own place, buy a car which seemed to be faraway dream before,” he enthuses.
