The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - CFA Philippines has organized the 1st Philippine Junior Finance and Investment Summit to entice students, professors and young professionals to join the world of Philippine finance and investment industry.

In fact, 5,000 students, professors, and young professionals are reportedly joining the summit on July 6, at the SMX Convention Center.

Students from around 30 schools reportedly signed up for the event.

CFA Philippines president April Tan said it is turning out to be the biggest event of the year for students interested in finance and investment.

“We’re so excited because many students will learn about the possibilities and opportunities that are out there in the world of finance and investment,” Tan added.

She said the country needs finance professionals with the skills and the ethical mindset to help propel the country to economic growth. With the influx of investments and rising confidence in the country’s economic prospects, these professionals will play a crucial role in building this momentum for growth.

The summit, meanwhile, will feature talks from some of the country’s most successful finance and investment professionals as well as regulatory officials and representatives from leading finance institutions.

Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) president and chief executive officer Hans Sicat and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo, are just two speakers coming from the regulator sector that will share their views on the Philippine economic outlook.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) resident representative Shanaka Jayanath Peiris will deal on the Fund’s global economic outlook while Money Market Association of the Philippines (MMAP) president Michael Calleja enlightens the public on fixed income investments.

COL Financial Group head of Research April Lynn Tan will be on hand to discuss stock market investments.

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) vice president Ricky Espiritu takes the public to the growing world of mutual funds, while BDO Unibank senior vice president and chief investment officer Marvin Fausto will explain what trust products and specifically what trust funds like unit investment trust funds (UITF).

Franklin Templeton Investment Ltd. executive vice president Simon Rudolph will explainportfolio management.

CFA Philippines will also have a segment on how the chartered financial analyst (CFA) designation can help these students and young professionals in building a flourishing career.

First introduced in 1963, the CFA charter has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world. To earn a CFA charter, a person must have four years of qualified investment work experience, become a member of CFA Institute, pledge to adhere to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct on an annual basis, apply for membership to a local CFA member society, and complete the CFA Program, which involves taking courses and passing a tough exam.

The event seeks to entice students taking business-related and finance-related courses such as, but not limited to, business administration/commerce, management, management engineering, economics/industrial economics, industrial engineering, accountancy, statistics, and applied mathematics/mathematics.

Companies supporting this learning event are COL Financial Group, HP Calculators, BPI-Asset Management and Trust Group, Jollibee Foods Corp., HP Philippines, HSBC, Accenture, AIG Insurance, Energy Development Corp., Sun Life Financial, Ayala Corp., and AXA Philippines.
