Manila Water supports World Water Day 2014
MANILA, Philippines - Manila Water, the East Zone concessionaire of Metro Manila and also the water and used water service provider of Rizal province, joined the country’s water and power sectors to raise public awareness on the close link between water and energy consumption as the entire nation joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Water Day.
Manila Water Operations Group director Geodino Carpio said the local theme of this year’s celebration, “Water is Power†focuses on the growing awareness that water conservation may be one of the most effective ways to save energy.
Carpio was one of several officials of the water sector who graced the kick off ceremony of the weeklong celebration at Angat Dam.
Carpio, along with officials from the from Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Energy, National Power Corp., National Irrigation Authority, Laguna Lake Development Authority, National Water Resources Board, Local Water Utilities Administration, Metropolitan Manila Water Sewerage System and other water agencies, participated in the tour of the Angat Hydroelectric Power Plant in Norzagaray, Bulacan, Ipo Dam and the La Mesa treatment plants to inform and educate the public on the journey of the water trail and the importance of these facilities in supplying water to nearly 14 million residents of Metro Manila.
As part of the Philippine Water Week, the Environment Management Bureau of DENR with Manila Water’s corporate social responsibility arm, Manila Water Foundation, also staged a free concert dubbed ‘Every Beat Leads to Manila Bay’ at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.
The celebration of World Water Day culminated in the SM Mall of Asia grounds with players in the water and energy sectors pledging support for the protection of water as a vital resource.
Manila Water pledged to further promote its Toka Toka environmental advocacy movement which seeks to revive the major rivers traversing eastern Metro Manila.
The movement calls for each one to do his own ‘Toka’ or share in protecting the environment by connecting to Manila Water’s sewer network, avail of the regular desludging or septic tank cleaning program, practise solid waste segregation and management and support community sanitation programs.
