The Globe Cordillera challenge

-

MANILA, Philippines - In line with its mission to protect and rehabilitate endangered environmental areas in the Philippines, leading telecommunications company Globe Telecom has again partnered with the Cordillera Conservation Trust (CCT) in staging the Globe Cordillera Challenge 3, a fund-raising biking activity designed to fast track reforestation efforts in the Cordillera mountain range.

For the third year in a row, CCT serves as the primary beneficiary of Globe Cordillera Challenge 3.  CCT is a non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated to help preserve the Cordillera mountain ecosystem.

It aims to establish about 20 seedling nurseries through the P800,000 that is expected to be raised from donations and sponsorships for the event.

Being the main source of life for most of northern Luzon and a vital resource area for water that serves the irrigation needs of thousands of hectares of farm land, the Cordillera region is the logical choice as the beneficiary of the project. Most of Luzon’s major river systems come from this region and serves as the largest catch basin of rain water in the country.

“The Globe Cordillera Challenge has always enjoyed enormous success in terms of awareness and reaction from the public through their donations. This year, we again hope to replicate this, while at the same time, make the effort more sustainable by building small plant nurseries through the help of CCT. This way, the people will be more aware of how to value and preserve the Cordillera region, the place they call home,” said Rob I. Nazal, head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.

A total of 250 bikers are expected to ride for 27 kilometers starting from Burnham Park in Baguio City and will end at the Mt. Cabuyao Summit in Tuba, Benguet.

The bike trail will provide an overview of the entire city of Baguio and the mountain range of the Cordillera and the Lingayen Gulf.

This mountain bike trail was also specially selected to test the riders’ capability to negotiate both rough and flat terrain and even sloping or ascending road tracks.

For mountain bikers to participate, they are asked to make a donation of at least P1,000 to CCT.  Bikers may donate through Globe GCASH (text DONATE<space>amount<space>CORDI and send to 2882) or deposit the amount to the Cordillera Conservation Trust BDO Account (Account name: Tignayan Para Iti Konserbasyon Ti Kordilyera; Account number – 5180031673).  Non-bikers who want to help the cause may also donate via the two options.

Again for this year, the biking event will be participated in by members of the Philippine Mountain Biking Forum (PHILMOFO) and the Philippine Mountain Biking Community (PMBC).

Major sponsors of the activity are Globe Tattoo@Home and Non Pareil International Freight and Cargo Service Inc. while Gerry’s Grill, BPI Globe BanKO, and The Manor Camp John Hay serve as other sponsors.  It is also being supported by partner bike shops, namely:  All Terra Cyclery, Bike One, Bike Worx, Gran Trail, John Wilkie, King’s Bicycle Store, Paulina’s Cycle Center, Life Cycle Bike Shop and Sabak Sports and Adventure Bike Shop.
