SMI issues sustainability report for Tampakan proj

MANILA, Philippines - Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) has announced publication of its Tampakan Copper-Gold Project 2010 Sustainability Report.

SMI general manager for operations and external relations Mark Williams said the publication of the annual sustainability report demonstrates SMI’s commitment to the highest standards of sustainable development, transparency and stakeholder engagement.

“The sustainability report discloses our economic, safety, health, environmental and social performance for the year.

Through this report, we share our goals, achievements, successes and challenges, as well as case studies that illustrate best practice sustainable development (SD) programs,” said Williams.

This is the fourth sustainability report published by the Tampakan project which has been developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 guidelines.

“GRI is the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework which enables our stakeholders to measure our sustainability performance against key indicators and compare it over time and against our annual targets,” said Williams.

SMI is in the process of presenting its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to stakeholders over the next 12 weeks for their feedback before formally submitting the document to the government later this year as part of the regulatory approval process for the proposed mine.

Separate EISs are also being developed for the power station, port facility and filter plant, concentrate pipeline and power transmission lines that are required to support the operation of the proposed mine.

SMI’s Tampakan project involves one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits. If developed, it will be the largest mine in the Philippines and expected to significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth.
