Sustainable agri confab reset to November 16
October 15, 2006 | 12:00am
Due to typhoon Milenyo, organizers of The First Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform Philippine Convention have moved the date to Nov. 16.
The SAI Philippine Convention secretar-iat, the organizers of the event, said the new date is final. The convention will still be held at the Emerald Ballroom, Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, as earlier announced.
In the wake of typhoon Milenyo, many parts of Metro Manila were left without power, disrupting the normal flow of busi-ness for several days. Recognizing that ma-ny of those who have expressed interest in the SAI platform would have more immediate priorities in dealing with the aftermath, organizers have also extended the registration per-iod to accommodate those who would still like to participate in the SAI platform.
The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) is a platform created by the food industry worldwide to actively support the development of sustainable agriculture. It heralds an unprecedented synergy between the private sector, academe and government to meet the food demands of future generations.
Sustainable agriculture has relevant social, environmental and economic dimen-sions which can have a tremendous impact on our daily lives. With proper imple-mentation, it has the potential to improve the quality of life of people through attainable goals which produce profit while promoting wise stewardship of our planets resources.
The SAI platform encompasses many issues that have a direct bearing on consumers, businesses and the environ-ment. Among its concerns are the quality and safety of food; the physical and economic well-being of farmers; the minimization and possible prevention of potentially damaging agricultural practices; governance and ste-wardship of air, water and land use; effec-tive use of non-renewable energy and the search for feasible alternative energy sources; biodiversity; crop health; and animal welfare.
