NFA sells rice for relief operations

Key officials of the National Food Authority (NFA) and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) signed recently a contract for the purchase of 1.05 million kilograms (kg) of NFA rice by the PNRC to be used in its relief and disaster management operations.

The rice to be bought by the PNRC is regular-milled with 25 percent brokens and packed in bags of 21 kg each. Total price of the purchased volume is P17.54 million.

NFA Administrator Gregorio Y. Tan Jr. and assistant administrator Conrado DL. Ibañez represented the NFA during the contract signing held at its central office in Quezon City. PNRC secretary general Victor A. Liozo Jr. was represented by Floyd B. Fernandez who is the delegation head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies together with officer-in-charge Paul Gwyn L. Pagaran of the PNRC’s disaster management services.

Tan said the NFA has a standing memorandum of agreement (MOA) with government relief agencies such as the PNRC, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as well as with local government units (LGUs) for the NFA to provide the rice needs of the institution’s disaster management programs.
