MANILA, Philippines — Former Bureau of Customs (BOC) commissioner Alberto “Bert” David Lina, a titan in the country’s logistics industry, has passed away at the age of 76.

The Lina Group of Companies, which Lina chairs, announced yesterday his death. The date and reason for his passing were not disclosed.

Lina, founding chairman of Air21, started his career as a certified public accountant before building a logistics and waste management empire.

“His leadership style was uniquely personal – managing by walking around, greeting employees daily with boundless energy, and believing in everyone’s potential. This hands-on approach created a corporate culture of inclusivity that remains his enduring legacy,” the Lina Group said.

Lina also served twice as the commissioner of the BOC, extending his legacy beyond business.

Lina, a former team owner in the Philippine Basketball Association, is likewise hailed as a tireless champion of Philippine sports, particularly basketball, cycling and golf.

He was also regarded as a loving patron of the arts, supporting the Manila Symphony Orchestra and the Philippine theater community.

Lina was a recipient of the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice from the Archdiocese of Manila.

A funeral mass and inurnment at the St. James the Great Parish in Muntinlupa is scheduled tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

“The Lina Group of Companies will honor his memory by continuing his vision of excellence in service and commitment to national development,” the group said.
