Sinulog Cup 2025 Basketball Tournament kicks off today

CEBU, Philippines — The Sinulog Cup 2025 Basketball Tournament fires off with two games on tap today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cebu City Vice Mayor Dondon Hontiveros announced in a press conference yesterday at Ssamthing Korean  in Baseline Center that five teams will be seeing action in the six-day cage wars that is free and open to the public.

The Cebuano hardcourt legend turned public servant was joined by commissioner Atty. Jave Mike Aton, deputy commissioner Jonathan Saso, and representatives of participating teams.

Interestingly, the Sinulog Cup will have its championship match a day after the week-long 1st Mayor Raymond Garcia Invitational Basketball Tournament begins at the Cebu City Sports Institute Gym in Barangay Sawang Calero.

Hontiveros take things lightly though even if it’s obvious that the two separate events organized by the warring camps at City Hall have political undertones.

“It’s good for the players nga daghan og liga ug taas-taas ang adlaw nga naa sila’y duwa,” said Hontiveros.

Meanwhile, Welec Trucking Services will go up against Team Frasco of Liloan in the 6 p.m. opener, while the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters will clash with the Cebu City selection composed of players from the Sugbo Cup in the main game at 7:30 p.m.

The visiting RKF Iloilo drew a bye on opening day.

The contenders will play a single round robin, with the Top 2 teams slugging it out for the coveted title in a sudden-death duel.

The champion will take home P200,000, while the first runner-up will pocket P100,000. The third to fifth placers will receive P50,000, P25,000, and P10,000, respectively.
