SM opening 87th mall

Richmond Mercurio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The SM Group, the largest mall operator and developer in the Philippines, is cementing further its retail dominance with the opening of its 87th mall in the country this week.

Through integrated property developer SM Prime Holdings Inc., the SM Group will open on Oct. 25 SM City JMall in Mandaue City.

SM City JMall is a four-story mall with a gross floor area of 78,229 square meters and a gross leasable area of 51,346 square meters.

The new shopping destination will bring a mix of global brands and local favorites to Cebu. It will also have eco-friendly features such as a rainwater catchment system in line with SM’s commitment to sustainability and green development.

SM currently has 86 malls across the country following the opening of SM City Caloocan last May.

On top of the upcoming SM City JMall, SM Prime is also eyeing to open two additional malls this year — SM City San Fernando La Union and SM City Laoag.

SM is targeting to have a portfolio of 100 malls in the country by the end of 2027 as it looks to further solidify its dominance in the Philippine retail landscape.

SM Supermalls is also undertaking a reinvention with the aim of transforming its malls into sustainable, innovative and community-centric spaces.

Under its reinvention plan, SM Supermalls intends to create more spaces for leisure and interaction in its malls, while celebrating local communities at the same time.

“Our goal is to create spaces that not only meet the needs of our customers but also anticipate and evolve with them. This new era is about forging deeper connections with our community and ensuring that every visit to our malls is meaningful and enriching,” SM Supermalls president Steven Tan said.

A key feature of the redevelopment of SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM City Bacolod, SM City Cebu and SM City Iloilo is the integration of indoor gardens as well as the development of more outdoor greeneries.

SM City Cebu is set to elevate the shopping experience with the addition of new retail shops, enhanced parking facilities and an al fresco dining area featuring an outdoor garden.

The development also includes a modern chapel, the National University Cebu campus and new office buildings that will transform SM City Cebu into a dynamic hub.

SM City Iloilo will also undergo a transformation that consists of a modernized exterior, a new campus and a sky garden at SM Strata.

The redevelopment of SM City Bacolod, meanwhile, will feature new dining experiences and enhanced wellness services.

“By spearheading these initiatives, SM Supermalls is helping shape the retail landscape of the Visayas, giving local consumers more reasons to shop, dine, and explore. From innovative mall features to sustainable development, SM continues to provide spaces where communities can thrive and grow,” SM Supermalls said.
