MANILA, Philippines — Customers of the Manila Electric Company will experience some relief this October as the power firm announces a reduction in electricity rates.

In a statement on Friday, Merlaco said that electricity rates will drop by P0.3587 per kWh in October, bringing down overall rates for an average household to P11.4295 per kWh from the previous P11.7882 per kWh in September.

“For residential customers consuming 200 kWh, they will see a decrease of around P72 in their total electricity bill this month,” Meralco said in a statement.

The decrease could be attributed to the lowering of generation charges by P0.3059 per kWh following decreased Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) costs.

WESM was able to offset charges after the collection of deferred May 2024 costs ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Meralco also cited that there was improved power supplied in the Luzon grid after demand and average capacity on outage decreased.

“The transmission charge also went down by P0.0383 per kWh due to lower ancillary service charges. Taxes and other charges similarly decreased by P0.0145 per kWh,” Meralco added.

The decrease in WESM charges offset increases in charges from the First Gas plants Sta. Rita and San Lorenzo.
