CHED retains autonomous status for UPHSL

Both autonomous and deregulated higher education institutions are allowed significant freedom to design their curriculum, establish linkages with recognized foreign HEIs, and get priority in the grant of subsidies and other financial incentives or assistance from CHED. They are also exempted from regular CHED monitoring and evaluation, as well as from the issuance of Special Order for their graduates.

MANILA, Philippines — In a recent decision, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has reaffirmed the autonomous status of the University of Perpetual Help System-Laguna (UPHSL) and the UPH-Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University, UPHSL’s annex school, recognizing the institutions commitment to quality and excellence in education.

The autonomous status has a validity period of three years, effective Sept. 16, 2024 to Sept. 15, 2027.

“The grant of autonomous status proves that UPHSL keeps itself attuned to global quality assurance, recognition and accreditation. It adopted a contemporary lens to level off quality indicators with local and international higher education advancements while considering the natural evolution of concepts through practice. The university’s dedication to providing top-notch education has been acknowledged locally and internationally,”  UPHSL CEO   Antonio Laperal Tamayo said.

Recently, the UPHSL was ranked 9th in the overall Philippine private universities rankings and 48th among ASEAN universities by AppliedHE, a Singapore-based organization providing higher education evaluation services. The organization ranks and rates universities, colleges and vocational institutions.

“These accolades reflect the continuous efforts of UPHSL to deliver quality education to its students,” Tamayo said.

The university’s global initiatives have been recognized with three QS stars from Quacquarelli Symonds, a renowned provider of services, analytics, and insights to the international higher education sector.

“The continuous recognition from CHED, ASEAN, and various local and international entities underscores UPHSL’s duty to provide quality education, foster global partnerships, and contribute to cutting-edge research. As the university retains its autonomous status, it stands poised to continue its mission of shaping future leaders and contributing to advancing education in the Philippines and beyond,” Tamayo said.
