MANILA, Philippines — FedEx, one of the world’s largest logistics providers, has committed to double the size of its facility at the Clark International Airport, confident that the gateway will become a shipping powerhouse in Asia Pacific.

The company yesterday announced its plan to make additional investments in its Clark hub in line with efforts to expand its logistics footprint in the Philippines.

FedEx signed a deal with Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD), the operator of the Clark International Airport, to pursue the  expansion.

In particular, FedEx wants to double the size of its facility in Clark to prepare for future demand. The expansion will support the logistics requirements of importers and exporters alike, as well as small and medium enterprises and large-scale freight shippers.

FedEx also vowed to work with the government and LIPAD in their pursuit of transforming Clark airport into a logistics center in the region, which both public and private sectors are pitching to shipping investors abroad.

FedEx Philippines managing director Maribeth Espinosa said the expansion will also contribute not only to the business viability of Clark but also to supply chains in the Philippines.

“This expansion is a testament to our strong commitment in facilitating cross-border trade and in optimizing the country’s supply chain capabilities,” Espinosa said.

In 2021, FedEx opened its $30 million facility in Clark to cater to the growing logistics demands in the country, primarily moved by the e-commerce boom during the pandemic.

This time, FedEx will upgrade its facility in Clark to provide larger global access to its clients in the Philippines. The courier will also enhance its capacity in handling and sending out cold chain shipments.

FedEx decided to push through with its expansion as the government is building up Clark for a logistics boom. The Bases Conversion and Development Authority eyes to undertake a P2.8-billion project this year to expand the airside facilities of the airport.

The agency also plans to build another runway in Clark to ensure that the gateway can facilitate flights even when the main strip is closed.
