MANILA, Philippines — The Association of Marine Officers and Ratings Inc. (AMOR Seaman), a group of Filipino seafarers urged President Marcos to immediately sign the latest version of the Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers due to the recent distressing experiences of Filipino seafarers amidst tensions and escalating security threats in the Red Sea.
The Red Sea is a vital maritime shipping lane connecting Asia to Europe that has recently experienced heightened political tensions and sea piracy attacks on maritime vessels. This poses significant challenges to the safety and livelihood of seafarers including Filipino seafarers navigating these waters.
Oiler seaman Jacinto Rivera, spokesperson for AMOR Seaman said, “We are now pleading for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to immediately sign the latest version of the Magna Carta for Filipino seafarers due to the growing threats to the lives of Filipino seafarers while working aboard ships in international seawaters. We believe our good president will help us and sign the Magna Carta for Filipino Seafarers to ensure our rights, protection and welfare. It’s our lifeline as seafarers who brave the seas to support our families and contribute well to our economy. “
Rivera pointed out as an example the traumatic experience of the 21 Filipino seafarers who were rescued from a ship that was damaged by Houthi rebels. It was reported that Houthi also used a drone to blow up one side of the Liberia-flagged coal carrier in the Red Sea.
Health Secretary Teddy Herbosa had said that the rescued Filipino seafarers may possibly be under post-traumatic stress.
