‘SM Green Finds x Zarah Juan’s Tarp Project: Weaving sustainability into the fabric of retail’

REPUTATION - Ron Jabal - The Philippine Star

In an era where environmental consciousness is not just a trend but a necessary shift toward sustainability, initiatives like SM Green Finds stand out as models for responsible corporate behavior. Through projects under the Green Finds Initiative, SM demonstrates an unwavering commitment to environmental preservation, circular economy principles and social empowerment. A prime example of such a project is the innovative collaboration dubbed “SM Green Finds x Zarah Juan’s The Tarp Project,” which highlights the creative and impactful ways in which businesses can contribute to the sustainability agenda.

At the heart of the Green Finds Initiative is the goal to promote products and processes that are environmentally friendly, thereby encouraging a culture of sustainability among consumers and businesses alike. It operates under the philosophy that every step taken toward sustainability, no matter how small, contributes significantly to the larger goal of environmental conservation. This initiative is a part of SM’s broader Green Movement, which encompasses a range of efforts aimed at reducing environmental impact, promoting sustainable practices and engaging the community in these endeavors.

The Tarp Project: A circular economy in action

The Tarp Project is a fitting illustration of the circular economy model, which advocates for the reuse and recycling of materials to extend their lifecycle, reduce waste and minimize the environmental footprint. By collecting used tarpaulins from various SM Store branches and repurposing them into reusable bags and pouches, this project diverts substantial amounts of waste from landfills, thereby mitigating potential soil and water pollution. This effort aligns perfectly with Sustainable Development Goal 12, which champions responsible consumption and production through the efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

For the initial phase, the Tarp Project aims to collect 5,000 square meters of used tarpaulin, a substantial amount that underscores the magnitude of potential waste diversion. This initiative is not just about waste reduction; it’s a testament to the creativity and innovation that can arise from sustainability challenges. The transformation of these tarpaulins into around 4,000 reusable bags and 1,400 pouches is a prime example of how materials can be given new life and purpose.

An essential aspect of the Tarp Project is its commitment to community empowerment. The cleaning and cutting of the collected tarpaulins are entrusted to the Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Quezon City Female Correctional Dormitory, providing them with meaningful work and a sense of contribution to a larger cause. Furthermore, the printing and assembly of the tarp bags are carried out by communities in Bulacan, offering economic opportunities and skills development.

This project exemplifies how environmental initiatives can also serve as vehicles for social impact. The profits generated from the sale of these bags and pouches are reinvested into the communities supported by the SM Foundation Inc., with a focus on advancing youth and education in the Philippines. This creates a virtuous cycle of empowerment, where environmental efforts lead to social and economic benefits, thereby fostering a more sustainable and equitable society.

Beyond the Tarp Project: The broader impact of SM Green Finds and the Green Movement

The Tarp Project is a sub-initiative under SM Green Finds, which is part of the group wide sustainability effort The Green Movement, a wide array of initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. From energy conservation measures and waste management programs to community-based environmental projects, SM is paving the way for a more sustainable future. By integrating sustainability into its business operations and community engagements, SM is not only reducing its environmental impact but also inspiring other businesses and individuals to follow suit.

Initiatives such as the SM Green Finds and the broader Green Movement underscore the critical role that corporations can play in advancing sustainability. By leveraging their resources, reach, and influence, businesses can drive significant positive change. However, this requires a commitment to going beyond traditional corporate social responsibility and embedding sustainability into the core of business practices and values.

The success of initiatives like Green Finds and the Tarp Project highlights the importance of collective effort in addressing environmental challenges. It’s a call to action for businesses, communities and individuals to embrace sustainability as a shared responsibility. Whether it’s through supporting eco-friendly products, participating in recycling programs, or advocating for sustainable practices, every action counts toward building a more sustainable and just world.

Indeed, the SM Green Finds Initiative, exemplified by the Tarp Project, represents a meaningful step toward sustainability, showcasing how innovative approaches to waste reduction, circular economy principles and community empowerment can come together to create lasting environmental and social impact.

It’s a powerful reminder of the role that businesses can play in advancing sustainability and the importance of collective action in achieving a greener, more sustainable future. As we move forward, let us draw inspiration from such initiatives and commit to making sustainability a central aspect of our lives and work, for the betterment of our planet and future generations.
