MANILA, Philippines — Wireless operator Globe Telecom Inc. has brought in an improved version of its technology that provides connectivity services, from call and text to internet access, in times of emergency.

Globe yesterday announced the launch of Cellsite At Less Footprint (CALF), which it plans to use for disaster response and recovery efforts for urgent situations like disaster response.

CALF demands a minimal requirement of 220 volts of power source and 2x2 meters of land area for its network to be activated.

Apart from this, the innovation comes with a quick installation and deployment feature, allowing Globe to activate it within the same day. Globe made CALF work this way for two reasons: first, to eliminate the need for extensive manpower in setting it up and second, to trim business costs required in running it.

As a temporary mobile solution, CALF offers a coverage ranging from a minimum of 10 meters to several kilometers. The technology also consumes less energy compared to its predecessor, the Cellsite on Wheels, given that power is usually compromised or down in periods of emergency.

Globe head of technology strategy and innovations Gerhard Tan said CALF performs better than its counterparts in other countries, particularly the portable mobile tower.

Tan said the portable mobile tower relies mainly on fiber and radio links to turn up a connection, while CALF depends on fiber, microwave and satellite, making its network stable.

Globe earlier deployed CALF at the Sanga-Sanga Airport in Tawi-Tawi to supply its critical facilities with connectivity.

“With its portability and power, CALF can be readily deployed in various situations, including in emergencies and big events that need additional capacity. Through this solution, we also hope to provide an agile response to connectivity demand,” Tan said.

Globe aims to maximize CALF in serving local network demands like outdoor events confined within a limited space.

Tan said that CALF was designed by Globe’s own engineers who were tasked to come up with a technology that caters to the requirements of local communities.
