Meralco asked to take over service in Nasugbu
MANILA, Philippines — Power distribution giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) received the green light from the Sangguniang Bayan of Nasugbu to take over electricity distribution in the municipality in Batangas.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Nasugbu issued Resolution 368 last Dec. 4 endorsing the transfer of electric service in the municipality to Meralco amid widespread dissatisfaction with the current power distributor.
A petition signed by some 22,695 residents and businesses highlighted concerns about alleged exorbitant electricity bills, frequent power interruptions, and poor service quality that cause disruption to day-to-day lives and operations.
“The Sangguniang Bayan understands the frustrations of our people. Their voices were heard loud and clear. For too long, our residents have struggled with unreliable and expensive electricity,” Nasugbu Vice Mayor Mildred Sanchez said in a statement.
“The resolution that the Sangguniang Bayan recently passed marks a turning point for Nasugbu. We are confident that Meralco’s expertise and proven track record would unlock a new era of growth and prosperity for our community,” Sanchez added.
The resolution directed the Office of the Municipal Mayor to actively facilitate the transition process that includes collaboration among the current provider, the national government, and relevant agencies to encourage Meralco’s expansion and ensure a smooth handover.
