NGCP to develop next generation of engineers

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) is helping develop the next generation of engineers in the country as part of efforts to further improve the energy sector.

In a bid to showcase the capability of its engineers and technical staff to inspire future engineers, NGCP said it conducted facility tours for university students from different parts of the country.

NGCP said several universities recently completed tours in its various facilities, including the Tarlac State University at NGCP’s Mexico Substation, Batangas State University at Laoag Substation, University of Nueva Caceres at Naga Substation, Mindanao State University-General Santos City Campus at Toril Substation, University of the East-Recto at Bauang Substation, and Mindanao State University-Marawi Campus at Baloi Substation.

According to the company, more than 400 engineering students from these universities participated in the facility tours, which included a walkthrough of its substation operations as well as presentations on the company’s critical role and contribution to the power industry.

“We are more than happy to host young minds at our facilities so they can see for themselves the everyday operations of NGCP. Understanding the importance of power transmission in the energy system, and how NGCP contributes to the country’s economic development is important to understanding the energy industry,” NGCP said.

“We also want to showcase the capability of our engineers and other technical staff, and we hope to inspire them as future engineers,” the company said.

NGCP plans to conduct more facility tours for university students in the coming months. It has been developing local talent by investing in world-class training and scholarships for aspiring Filipino engineers.

The company recently pledged its commitment to President Marcos’ 2023 energy initiatives, as expressed in his second State of the Nation Address.

To improve disaster resilience of the grid infrastructure, NGCP has vowed to intensify its ongoing and continuous upgrade of equipment and manpower, especially those that will prevent disruptions, or provide expedient repair, in case of natural disasters.

Since 2009, it has completed a total of 56 projects, with investments in the transmission system amounting to P300 billion.

NGCP holds a 25-year concession and a 50-year Congressional franchise to expand and operate the country’s power transmission grid.
