NGCP: Huge investments cut transmission costs, outages
MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said its investments in the past 14 years benefitted consumers through lower transmission charges and less frequent service interruptions.
Since the private sector assumed operation in 2009 up to 2022, NGCP said incidents of transmission outages fell to 1.3385% in Luzon, from 6.4732% when the grid operator was still under state control.
In Visayas, transmission outages dropped to 0.9508%, from 6.6530% previously, data showed.
Transmission outages in Mindanao, meanwhile, declined to 1.3285% from 8.0788%.
Transmission blackouts became less frequent because of increased availability of supply. NGCP data showed transmission availability in Luzon improved to 99.3160%, from 99.2428% previously, while availability in Visayas and Mindanao went up to 99.6538% and 99.7206%, respectively.
The hefty capital expenditures also resulted in more stable transmission frequency, which went up to 99.9762% in Luzon.
In Visayas, NGCP said transmission frequency increased to 99.6877% from 98.2116%.
But in Mindanao, transmission frequency slightly declined to 99.8103%, from 99.8890%, which the NGCP attributed to “insufficient regulating reserves due to El Niño in 2010”.
“This is a generation issue beyond NGCP’s control,” the grid operator said.
NGCP has so far invested P300 billion since 2009. A total of 3,729 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines, 28 new substations, and an additional 31,190MVA of transformer capacity has been installed in the past 14 years.
