MANILA, Philippines — The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) is finalizing  details for the planned extension of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) that would make it reach the upper section of Antipolo.

LRTA administrator Hernando Cabrera told reporters  the consultant hired by the agency is expected to submit the feasibility study for the Cogeo Extension Project this month.

The LRTA can afterward discuss its content with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and decide on the fate of the project.

“The feasibility study of the Cogeo extension will be completed this month. The consultant will deliver a final report. I talked to the consultant the other day. They said they are now preparing the submission of the presentation of the final report to the high level of DOTr,” Cabrera said.

According to Cabrera, the feasibility study will identify how much is needed to put up the project and the number of stations to be added to the LRT-2. The consultant was also tasked to find out how many passengers will be serviced by the extension of the railway.

The LRTA, operator of the LRT-2, wants to install three new stations to the east of the rail line to reduce the passenger volume that usually builds up in the final stop, Masinag.

Prior to this, the LRTA extended the LRT-2 by two stops to the east, building the Marikina-Pasig and Antipolo Stations to serve passengers coming from Rizal province.

The local governments of Pasig City, Marikina City and Antipolo said there is a need to extend the railway further to the east.

Once the feasibility study is filed, the LRTA can proceed with the implementation of the project.
