Globe shifts 10 facilities to solar

Elijah Felice Rosales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines —  Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. has transitioned 10 more facilities in Luzon and Visayas to renewable energy, as it reduces its carbon emissions to become net zero by 2050.

The mobile giant said it shifted additional facilities in Cavite, Cebu, Laguna, and Metro Manila to clean power, increasing the number of its sites operating on renewable energy to 24.

Apart from The Globe Tower in Taguig City, it employs green power for six of its facilities in Quezon City, five in Cavite, three in Cebu, two in Makati City and one each in Batangas, Mandaluyong City, Manila City, Marikina City, San Juan City, and Tarlac.

Globe has tapped the resources of Ayala Group’s energy unit ACEN Corp. in its transition to renewables as it hopes to shift as many facilities to clean energy, particularly those operating on high levels of power.

In 2019, Globe started decarbonizing its operations by procuring renewable energy bundled with carbon offsets through power purchasing agreements.

The firm said that its shift to renewables made use of the Green Energy Option (GEO), a program of the Department of Energy that offers consumers with a monthly average peak demand of 100 kilowatts per hour and above the option to engage directly with suppliers of renewable energy.

Globe wants to encourage additional investments in clean sources of power and said that it took the lead by purchasing renewables from retail energy suppliers.

As part of the Ayala Group, Globe is working on decreasing its carbon footprint with the goal of becoming net zero by 2050.

In 2021, Ayala Corp. signed up to the global commitment of attaining net zero in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning its business strategies with the Paris Agreement that seeks to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Rizza Maniego-Eala, chief finance and risk officer at Globe, said the company continues to upgrade its facilities to renewable sources.

She said that Globe aims to sustain its efforts in minimizing its carbon emissions as a contribution to the planet.

“This shift to renewable energy is part of Globe’s overall climate action roadmap and in support of both the country and the Ayala Group’s goal to reduce carbon emissions. We are continuously shifting our high energy utilization facilities to renewable energy sources, and we are looking forward to enrolling more eligible facilities as we proactively address climate-related risks,” Eala said.
