Shell rolls out first EV charging station

Danessa Rivera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC) rolled out yesterday its first high-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station as well as its first nature-based solutions carbon offset service for drivers in the country.

The two initiatives called Shell Recharge and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) Carbon Offset Service were launched at the  Shell Mamplasan station along South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

Through these new offerings, PSPC said it would now cater to EV users and customers who are on their carbon-offsetting journey.

“These two new low-emission energy solutions encapsulate what Pilipinas Shell means when we say sustainability. It’s about providing energy in a responsible manner to our consumers so that we can minimize the impact we make on the environment while achieving a lower-carbon future,” Shell Philippines country head Lorelie Quiambao-Osial said.

Shell Recharge is initially available at Shell Mamplasan and will gradually roll out to more Shell Mobility stations within the next 12 months.

PSPC said this is currently the most powerful direct current (DC) fast charger, which comes with two EV charging points with CCS2 connector – allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously.

With a 180-kilowatt-hour (kwh) DC fast charger, the Shell Recharge station at Shell Mamplasan allows an average EV to get a full charge in just 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Shell NBS Carbon Offset Service will be available within 15 sites including Shell Mamplasan by July, with a target of 100 sites by yearend.

This is an expansion of PSPC’s carbon offset service from B2B customers to everyday customers such as drivers.

“By being the first Shell market in Asia to offer this particular service to everyday customers, Pilipinas Shell underscores its commitment to continue powering progress to achieve a more sustainable future,” Quiambao-Osial said.

In 2020, PSPC became the first energy company in the country to offer the NBS Carbon Offset Service to its B2B fleet customers.

For an additional service fee per liter, customers can opt to compensate the equivalent carbon emissions from their fuel purchase.

The launch of Shell Recharge and Shell NBS Carbon Offset Service is part of the steps that PSPC is undertaking to meet its goal towards a lower carbon footprint.
