Toyota recalls GR Yaris for faulty radar sensor

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP) is recalling 94 units of the GR Yaris hatchback to address the vehicle’s faulty radar sensor.

In a letter to Department of Trade and Industry Consumer Protection and Advocacy director Melquiades Marcus Valdez II, TMP first vice president for customer service operations Bernardino Arevalo said the Japan-based company is undertaking a special service campaign on certain GR Yaris models sold in the country due to the millimeter wave sensor or radar sensor.

He said the special service campaign would cover GR Yaris units produced from June 3 to Aug.2 last year.

GR Yaris units are equipped with a millimeter wave sensor and a camera to detect objects in front of the vehicle.

The sensors support certain driver assistance features, including the pre-collision system (PCS).

TMP learned that the initialization of the radar sensor may not have been completed correctly at the vehicle assembly plant and as such, may not be activated.

In this condition, the PCS may not be able to detect a vehicle in front of the subject vehicle and would not provide warnings or braking assistance.

The vehicle would also not be able to display a message or indicator to inform the driver the PCS is not working and this may increase the risk of crash.

“With this, we will inspect, and initialize the millimeter wave sensor, if necessary, at no cost to our customers,” Arevalo said.

TMP’s special service campaign is being undertaken in line with the company’s commitment to product safety and quality.

To find out if their vehicle is affected by any recall, TMP customers can use the firm’s online service campaign checker https://toyota.com.ph/service-campaign.
