MANILA, Philippines — New major telecommunications player Dito Telecommunity has started piloting its 5G fixed wireless broadband in select areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) in a bid to further strengthen its position in the market.

Dito said it has started the rollout of its 5G home WiFi offering through a pilot program in 146 barangays in Metro Manila.

According to the company, barangays in the cities of Manila, Caloocan, and Quezon will be the first to experience up to 500 Mbps of download speed through the Dito 5G Home WiFi starter kit.

Dito earlier said it was going to use its 5G network to provide fixed wireless access services to homes, with fiber to the home as a long term outlook.

The Dito 5G Home WiFi starter kit is priced at P12,990, which includes the 5G modem with SIM.

As a welcome offer, Dito said subscribers would get 50 GB open-access data valid for 30 days, a bonus three-month subscription to HBO GO, and double data promos valid for 30 days.

Since its commercial launch in March last year, Dito has gained over six million subscribers in its network.

It intends to end the year with around 12 million users.

The company,  a joint venture of the group of Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy and China Telecommunications, is optimistic it will be able to pass its third annual technical audit in July, in which it committed to achieve 70 percent population coverage and a minimum average speed of 55 Mbps.

Dito has committed to increase basic internet speed to 55 Mbps and cover 84 percent of the country’s population over a five-year period through a total of P257 billion investment.
