Dyson to recruit more Filipino engineers

MANILA, Philippines — Technology firm Dyson plans to invest more in the Philippines, particularly in engineering and technology development, to meet the growing demand for its products and support the company’s growth.

“Dyson’s global growth is fueled by technology. To keep up with the demand for our products, we intend to continue investing in our engineering and operations capabilities in the Philippines,” Phillip Stephens, head of research, design and development at Dyson Philippines, said in an email to reporters.

He said the company also plans to invest further in technology development, which would involve the conduct of more research and development in the country.

He said the Philippines plays an important role in Dyson’s future as the company has chosen the country as the location of its software hub, working with engineers in the UK and Singapore for the conduct of experiments, testing and development of embedded software for the new generation of intelligent machines.

In November last year, Dyson announced it is opening a software hub in Alabang as part of a £2.75 billion global investment in future technology.

As the Philippines is home to highly skilled software engineers and scientists, Dyson saw it fit to set up the software hub in the country.

Stephens said there are currently 40 engineers in the software hub and the company intends to grow the team to 400 over the next three years.

“We have ambitions to develop a new generation of Dyson technologies that perform better – and technologies that are increasingly intelligent. To do so requires that we invest into our future. This means bringing on board engineers with the right sets of skills, and importantly, attracting people who share in our ambition to engineer technologies that solve problems,” he said.

He said the firm is looking for embedded software engineers, automation test engineers, robotics platform engineers, robotics application engineers, robotics algorithm engineers, machine learning algorithm engineers, scrum masters, product owners, program managers, release train engineers, and team leaders for the software hub.

As part of efforts to attract talent, Rose Ramos, who serves as head of human resources at Dyson Philippines, said the company is offering a holistic graduate development program designed to help young graduates grow through on-the-job learning, mentorships and formal training.

Apart from the software hub, Dyson is present in the country through its advanced manufacturing facility at Carmelray Industrial Park II in Laguna.

The facility employs 600 individuals involved in the production of motors used in Dyson products such as vacuum cleaners and personal care technologies.

Globally, Dyson has 14,000 employees, of which nearly half are engineers and scientists.
