MANILA, Philippines — Alcantara-led Alsons Power Group has shortlisted two global contractors to build its 105-megawatt (MW) San Ramon Power Inc. (SRPI) coal-fired power plant in Zamboanga City.

In a statement yesterday, Alsons Power said two global construction and engineering contractors were shortlisted out of five companies that initially submitted bid proposals for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the SRPI plant.

These are are Northeast No.1 Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. (NEPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group and Shandong Electric Power Construction Co. (SEPCO III), a subsidiary of Power Construction Corp. of China.

They edged out three other multinational engineering and construction companies that bidded for the SRPI power plant contract.

Shenyang-based NEPC was founded in 1951 and has been engaged in major power projects in China, Mongolia, Iraq, Turkey and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, SEPCO III was founded in 1985 in Qingdao City and has been involved in key power projects in China, Nigeria, India, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Bosnia and Herzegovina and various South East Asian countries.

The two firms edged out  three other multinational engineering and construction companies that bidded for the SRPI power plant contract.

Alsons Power said the plant would provide baseload power to Zamboanga City and nearby areas.

It said preliminary engineering and design work is expected to begin within the fourth quarter of 2019, while commercial operations are set to commence in 2023.

Once operational, the plant will play a crucial role in providing baseload power to Zamboanga City and stabilizing power supply in the Zamboanga peninsula.

Alsons Power vice president for project development Joseph Nocos said the project underscores the company’s commitment to bring the project to completion.

“These bid submissions are a testimony to the keen interest the SRPI project has generated and are a vote of confidence to the future of Zamboanga City,” he said.

Alsons Power, Mindanao’s first and most experienced independent power producer, currently operates four bunker diesel and coal power facilities in the island with a total generating capacity of 363 MW serving key cities such as Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, General Santos and Zamboanga.

It is also entering the renewable energy sphere through run-of-river hydroelectric power projects with a total hydro capacity potential totaling more than 145 MW in Negros Occidental, Sarangani, Davao Oriental, Zamboanga del Norte, the two Agusan provinces, and Surigao del Sur.
