BSP chief Nestor Espenilla Jr. extends medical leave
MANILA, Philippines — Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Nestor Espenilla Jr. has extended anew his medical leave as he continues to recover from early stage tongue cancer.
In an advisory, the BSP’s Corporate Affairs Office said the BSP chief would be on leave until Oct. 28.
Espenilla is scheduled to be back today after extending his medical leave until Oct. 17. He started his two-week leave last Sept. 27 and extended it by two more weeks to Oct. 17.
BSP Deputy Governors Chuchi Fonacier, Diwa Guinigundo and Ma. Almasara Cyd Tuaño-Amador took turns serving as officer-in-charge during Espenilla’s absence.
“Thereafter, he may be taking intermittent medical leaves. During his medical leaves, BSP deputy governors will be taking turns as OIC in accordance with established BSP business continuity protocol,” the central bank said.
The BSP chief earlier said his treatment is progressing very well.
Espenilla, who turned 60 last Friday, assumed office in July last year replacing former BSP Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. who served an unprecedented two six-year terms.
