MANILA, Philippines - Filipino businessmen are lining up to join a delegation that will accompany President Duterte in his visit to Russia late next month, as they seek to take a first crack at the trade and investment deals to be signed between the Philippines and its potential new ally.
“There are many who have indicated for Russia, a lot of businessmen want to be part of the delegation,” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said.
He said at least 100 business executives are expected to sign up and join Duterte’s trip, which is scheduled on May 25.
“Apparently, it is said that the Philippines is not yet well known in Russia because it is just now that we are opening to them,” he said.
“We had a good diplomatic relationship but it was not maximized,” the trade chief added.
Lopez said there is a preparation visit to Russia this week to look into the companies and businessmen there.
Lopez said letters of intent between the private sector are expected to be signed during the visit.
“They are very much interested in our agriculture and processed food. As for us, we will push more for garments and fashion apparel,” Lopez said.
The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) is helping gather the Philippine delegation to accompany Duterte in his state visit to Moscow.
