Laguna Lake clearing operations in full swing

MANILA, Philippines - Clearing and dismantling operation at the Laguna Lake will get into full swing starting this month, as the government aims to finish it in time for President Duterte’s second State of the Nation Address.

The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) said clearing operations resumed Friday after the board resolution calling large-scale fish pen operators to self-dismantle expired end-March.

LLDA general manager Jaime Medina said first to be removed are 30 fish pens, each measuring from five to 50 hectares, either owned by individuals or companies.

“These structures are prioritized for demolition for having violated the Laguna de Bay Fisheries Zoning and Management Plan and non-payment of fees and charges totalling P50.7 million,” he said.

The LLDA targets to dismantle a total of 347 fish pens covering over 10,000 hectares, more than 90 percent of which are occupied by 222 corporations.
